In the gospel today, Jesus tells a story about a king who gave a fancy dinner party for his son’s wedding. He worked hard to make his dinner perfect. He sent out invitations. But none of the invited guests came! In response to this, the king then just invited other guests, and they all had a wonderful time. This parable invites us to ask: to what extent are we responding to God’s invitation to the wedding feast the way the first guests did: giving priority to our own business rather than to the invitation? Some people don’t pay attention to God’s invitation. Some would rather be someplace else. Some prefer to go to work rather than to a banquet. Others seem offended by the invitation, and beat up the messengers. This is so very sad for them because God has many gifts of joy for all who come and celebrate. Response depends on the relationship. The most wonderful thing about God is no matter how many times we might refuse to accept the Lord’s invitation God never gives up but waits patiently for each one of us to respond. When we know of someone who has been away from the Church for a while, we need keep them in our prayers, and be as patient and compassionate as God is. Trusting in God can be hard advice to follow. But with persistent prayer, nothing is impossible.
