A Refresher on Mass Intentions

Every week we see under the Mass intentions, a Mass for the Parishioners. Why is that? In Latin it is known as Missa pro popluo, or Mass for the people. Canon Law, the law of the Church, states the following: Can. 534 §1. “After a pastor has taken possession of his parish, he is obliged to apply a Mass for the people entrusted to him on each Sunday and holy day of obligation in his diocese. If he is legitimately impeded from this celebration, however, he is to apply it on the same days through another or on other days himself.” So every pastor is required to offer one Mass on the weekend for the people of his parish. This Mass is listed in our bulletin as People of the Parish. This “Mass for the people” is NOT to be combined with any other intentions, which brings us to a second topic involving Mass intentions.

According to that same Canon Law… paragraph 948 states, “…separate Masses are to be applied for the intentions for which an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted.” Which means when someone asks for a Mass to be said for their intention, it will be only that one intention that will be offered for that Mass and not one of multiple intentions. There have been times when the Church has permitted multiple intentions for a Mass, but that is meant to be with certain criteria being met and is to be the exception and not the norm. With that said, considering the size of our parish and the amount of intentions that could be requested, if you are unable to book an intention because there are no open Mass times available, we will be offering you another option. The once 9:00 am Tuesday morning Mass is being moved to 7:00 pm Tuesday evening. Firstly, this will enable people, who because of their work schedule are not able to attend a weekday Mass the opportunity to do so. Secondly this Mass will be an Anniversary Mass where anyone can call the parish office and have your deceased loved one’s name included in the Mass intention for that week. This Mass will be treated like the Mass for the people, with no Mass stipend being accepted. If you have any further questions about this Mass feel free to call the office.

Anniversary mass intentions for weekly Tuesday evening Mass: at the 7:00 pm mass. Call or email the Parish Office to add the name of your loved ones (who died on or about this date) to the intentions for this mass. No stipend is required. Please call before Wednesday at noon and the names will be added to the bulletin. Any questions please contact the Parish Office.
