The Season of Easter comes to an end with today’s celebration of Pentecost. The Acts of the Apostles tells the story of the great event. The Spirit, with the sound of a mighty wind, fills all assembled with God’s presence. The disciples, coming from so many different places, are able to understand each other. The Spirit’s gift of understanding operates within and among us at a number of different levels for our benefit, and through us for the benefit of the wider world. God’s Spirit strengthens our ability to understand ourselves in deepening ways. Beyond that, the Spirit of God lives within us helping us put ourselves in the shoes of another: giving us the capacity for empathy and compassion. The Holy Spirit works within communities and among nations inspiring solutions to the problems and crises spawned by the failure to appreciate and comprehend dilemmas and work toward their solution. The Spirit of God is offered as gift. It is for us to call upon the Gift from on High, to open our hearts to his guidance, and to respond to that inspiration in the choices and decisions of our lives.
